Improvisation On the Saxophone in Primary Art Education

Abstract:

The study deals with the importance of improvisation in primary art education (Elementary Art School) for children at the age from 10 to 16, especially in playing the saxophone. The study is based on an analysis of 6 case studies of children who played the saxophone. An important part of the research were also simple motivic exercises (12), which the author created from available textbooks of jazz improvisation. For the purposes of improvisation, he simplified some jazz standards and created his own compositions. Through the method of interview, observation, Torrance’s figural test, the author came to the conclusion that although the students did not have the ambition to become professional musicians and they showed only average musical talent, all 6 students developed creativity and musical thinking very well.
