Music in Catholic Churches in Banská Bystrica in the Nineteenth Century

Abstract:

In the nineteenth century, Banská Bystrica was an important Hungarian city thanks to the development of crafts and the establishment of associated social institutions. In addition to a growing secular musical culture, religious life was an integral part of the city, which ensured sufficient funds for major church music productions. In the five municipal Catholic churches, German, Hungarian and Slovak were also used in addition to liturgical Latin. Ján Egry, a regenschori in Banská Bystrica, was an important personality. He contributed to the repertoire of the choirs and the orchestra by his own compositions, procured new repertoires, brought the available musicians together and, last but not least, performed the musical works of his predecessors, about whom we still know very little.
